Der Ronsenkavalier was severely harmed given that the LP version was already a birght recording with x-ray detail. But here it is sounding, if not mellow, at least not ear-piercing. The loudest tuttis from the ever-magnificent Vienna Phil. still cause some ear burn, but the voices no longer do, thank God/5(7).

“Der Rosenkavalier,” in Its Era of Composition At the Metropolitan Opera, Robert Carsen sets the sumptuous opera in the year of its writing, right before the First World War. Ironies : Russell Platt. Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal.

It is loosely adapted from the novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas by Louvet de Couvrai and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac. It was first performed at the Königliches Librettist: Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Der Rosenkavalier is like the concept musical of opera: more about ideas and setting than linear plot, its staging almost written into its text.

(Think of it as the intellectual grandparent of Follies and Cabaret, which are both oddly similar in some ways.). Der Rosenkavalier is one of my favourite operas but I must admit to finding this production a little disappointing. Der Rosenkavalier is a Viennese farce, but like the Mozart comedies that it is styled on, the opera opens up deeper meditations on life, falling in love, forgetting the past, not even thinking about the future.

Trio from Act III of Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier." Renée Fleming (Marschallin), Christine Schäfer (Sophie), Susan Graham (Octavian). Production: Nathaniel Merrill. Conductor: Edo de Waart. That updating (with sets by Paul Steinberg and costumes by Brigitte Reiffenstuel) effectively plumbs the story’s undercurrents.

But Mr. Carsen has more in mind than giving the opera an early Author: Anthony Tommasini. The Met’s first new production since of Strauss’s rich romantic masterpiece stars Renée Fleming in one of her signature roles as the Marschallin, opposite Elina Garanca in her first North American performances as Octavian, the impulsive young title character.

In the Met’s new production.Der Rosenkavalier. Review by: Robert Levine. Artistic Quality: 8 Sound Quality: 3. One of the reasons I like this performance so much will be the reason others don’t – there are cuts in each act, with the final act being reduced by about 25%.

Some call it blasphemy, I call it a fine decision leading to good home listening.Inhowever, the librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal was involved with plans to film Der Rosenkavalier, and he persuaded Strauss to arrange music from the opera to accompany the film. Since this occurred approximately several years before sound was introduced into film, the score would have been performed by an orchestra while the film was.
